01/ Overview
The route
The ascent from the pass village of Splügen to Safierberg pass is not a walk in the park. The zig-zag descent to the unspoilt Safien Valley is also steep. You should keep your eyes peeled in Beverin Nature Park, home of the ibex.
From Splügen, the white-red-white-marked mountain trail heads uphill. Open meadows and alpine pastures dominate the scenery as the route steadily gains elevation. The long climb defines the first half of this 14-kilometre hike; with around 1,050 metres of ascent and a good five hours’ walking time, it demands stamina.
After just over two hours, the Safierberg is reached. The pass lies at just under 2,500 m and is also the highest point of the hike. The Schollenhorn rises nearby. Beyond the top of the pass, the mountain trail descends into the Safiental. It now loses elevation across broad pastures and open slopes.
In the final third, the gradient gradually becomes gentler. At the small Wanna balancing reservoir, the trail approaches the Rabiusa and follows the stream for a short stretch. The descent then continues across open pastureland to Turra. The route ends at the Thalkirch, Turrahus bus stop.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
