Alte Averserstrasse

The old Avers road runs from the Roffla Gorge into the high valley of the Avers to Juf, the highest settlement in Europe to be occupied all year round. The historical transportation route was originally built in 1895 and, over the past few years, it has been re-instated as a hiking trail.

The long route to Juf begins at the Andeer, Rofflaschlucht bus stop. The mountain trail initially passes the Rofflafall and climbs through woodland and across open slopes, passing through the villages of the Ferreratal. Almost the entire route follows paths marked in white-red-white. At around 29 kilometres, with some 1,900 metres of ascent and a walking time of just over eleven hours, the hike requires a high level of fitness.

Beyond Innerferrera, open meadows and pastures dominate the landscape. Longer climbs alternate with short counter-ascents before the route passes the Walserstuba near Cröt. Farther up the valley lies Cresta, with its listed Reformed church directly beside the trail. The small settlements stand out clearly in the broad valley landscape.

Towards the end, the mountain trail continues uphill. Shortly before the destination, the route reaches its highest point at around 2,140 m. From there, it is only a short distance to Juf. The hike ends near the Avers, Juf bus stop.
