Via Capricorn

Split into three day-long stages, the Via Capricorn leads across ibex country on the slopes of the Schamserberg and right through the middle of Beverin Nature Park. You can discover the area’s rich alpine flora, unique geology and the original Walser culture, all on foot.

From the Wergenstein, Dorf bus stop, the mountain trail climbs above the Schamserberg through open pastures and rocky terrain to the Carnusapass. This 2,605-metre packhorse pass connects Wergenstein with Safien; distinctive switchbacks characterise both sides of the pass. The route then continues to the Glaspass before losing considerable height across Alpine pastures and through forest.

In Safien Platz, the trail reaches the valley floor and skirts the small balancing reservoir. It then leads up the valley past the scattered houses of Camanaboda to Thalkirch, where the listed Reformed church and its walled cemetery stand directly on the route. Farther up the valley are the Wanna balancing reservoir and a short section alongside the Rabiusa.

The second major climb now begins, leading into the rocky high mountains. Shortly before the Farcletta digl Lai Grand, the circuit reaches its highest point at around 2,660 metres. On the descent, the Raptgusa briefly accompanies the mountain trail, and a little farther on, the Lai Grand lies close to the route. The trail returns to the bus stop in Wergenstein across broad slopes and several unmarked sections.
