Via Capricorn, Stage 1/3

From the mountain village of Wergenstein, the first stage leads over mountain pastures and alpine slopes to the Carnusa Pass. There are always ibexes to be seen along this stretch. After passing the turquoise Lai da Scotga, or Scottish Tarn, the trail continues to the Glas Pass.

The long day in the mountains begins directly at the Wergenstein, Dorf bus stop. The route leaves Wergenstein by the listed Reformed church and climbs out of the village onto open meadows and pastures. It follows a mountain hiking trail almost throughout; only early in the ascent is there a short section outside the marked trail network. Passing the rocky Tguma, the path continues into the barren high country.

After just under three and a half hours, the route reaches the Carnusapass. At 2,605 m, the pass is also the highest point and connects Wergenstein with Safien. Distinctive switchbacks are a reminder that a well-constructed packhorse trail crosses the pass here.

Beyond the top of the pass, the long descent begins. Rocky terrain gradually gives way again to broad alpine pastures as the mountain trail leads towards the Glaspass. After around 19 kilometres and seven hours, the hike ends at the Glaspass; the nearest bus stop, Tschappina, Glaspass, is around 400 m away.
