Alpine Panorama Trail, Stage 12/29

This stage runs entirely along one of the main legs of the Way of St. James. Its highlight is the Werthenstein pilgrimage site with a famous Bernese sacred image and the Gnadenbrünneli fountain, which is said to help with eye problems.

The approximately ten-kilometre hike to Wolhusen begins directly at the Malters, Emmenstrasse bus stop. For the first few metres, the path leads between the houses of Malters and out into the countryside. A short section runs outside the marked hiking trail network, after which the yellow signposts indicate the way ahead. Before long, the route passes directly by the Schwellisee.

Open meadows and pastures now alternate with stretches of woodland. The path winds through gently rolling countryside, gradually gaining elevation. After a little over two-thirds of the route, the houses of Werthenstein draw closer. There, the route passes the pilgrimage church of Unsere Liebe Frau before leaving the village again.

Beyond Werthenstein, the path climbs once more and reaches its highest point at around 600 m. It then descends through woodland and across open country to Wolhusen. After just over two and a half hours, the hike ends at the Wolhusen, Kreisel bus stop.
