The route
This trail leads past 17 churches and chapels. These witnesses of the past are strung along the ancient Lucerne - Aarburg route. The openness and breadth of the hilly landscape of Canton Lucerne with Mts. Pilatus, Napf and Menzberg radiates welcome.
From the Hellbühl, Post stop, the hiking trail leads out of the village and up into the open hills. After the first ascent, the route reaches its highest point near Homberg at around 745 m. It then continues through broad meadows, fields and small settlements, descending gently towards Ruswil. Standing directly on the route is the late-Baroque parish church of St. Mauritius, a cultural property of national significance.
The route continues through the Luzern Mittelland to the heights of St. Ottilien. Built in 1669, the pilgrimage chapel with its cruciform floor plan stands directly beside the trail, forming a striking landmark around the halfway point of the hike. Buttisholz and Grosswangen provide village sections, while between them the landscape opens out again across meadows and pastures.
Towards the end, the Rot accompanies the trail for a good stretch towards Ettiswil. After 21 kilometres and just over five hours, the hike ends near the Ettiswil, Post stop.
