01/ Overview
The route
The trail starting from the Joux valley at the foot of the Jura, leads through the regional Jura Vaudois Nature Park to the highest summit of the Swiss Jura, Mont Tendre (1,679m), with a magnificent view of the Alps and the Lake of Geneva.
The roughly five-hour hike begins at Le Sentier-L’Orient railway station. The yellow-waymarked trail leaves the village and climbs out of the Vallée de Joux, first through forest and then across open Jura pastures. This long ascent defines the first half of the 16-kilometre route.
After just under three hours, the trail reaches Mont Tendre. At almost 1,680m, it is the highest point of the hike and also the highest summit in the Swiss Jura. A little further on, the Buvette du Mont Tendre lies beside the trail. The long descent to Montricher then begins.
Crossing pastures and passing through quiet stretches of forest, the route now steadily loses altitude. Towards the end, it passes the Le Belvédère viewpoint before entering the forest once more. After a total descent of around 1,000 metres, the first houses of Montricher come into view. The hike ends at the Montricher, village stop.
