01/ Overview
The route
Circular hike from Le Pont on Lake Joux to the Dent de Vaulion. Return via the Pétra Félix fortification. The peak offers sweeping views over up to eight lakes, framed by the Alps and the Mont-Blanc massif.
The circular hike begins at the Le Pont (lac) stop, just a few steps from Lac de Joux. The largest lake in the Jura massif fills the floor of the Vallée de Joux. The trail soon leaves the shore and climbs along yellow-waymarked hiking paths through woodland and across open Jura slopes. The ten-kilometre circuit involves around 440 metres of ascent in total.
Below the Dent de Vaulion, the route reaches its highest point at just over 1,400 m. The distinctive mountain itself rises slightly away from the trail; its northern side drops away in high rock faces, while the southern slopes are considerably gentler. Close to the route, the Buvette de la Dent de Vaulion offers a place to stop for refreshments. The trail then sweeps round in a broad arc to the Col de Pétra Félix before returning to the valley through alternating pastures and woodland. After just under three hours, the circuit ends back in Le Pont on Lac de Joux.
