01/ Overview
The route
The hike from Vallorbe to Mont d'Or offers an exceptional panorama: Chasseron, Suchet, Lake Neuchâtel, Joux Valley and Lake St Point.
This 13-kilometre circular hike begins directly at Vallorbe railway station. The route first leads out of the village before climbing through extensive woodland on yellow-marked hiking trails. The long ascent defines the first half of the hike: as the elevation increases, the trees give way in places to open meadows and pastures. Near Le Montagnat, the highest point is reached at around 1'460 m.
Around the highest point, the route follows a longer section outside the marked hiking trail network. Reliable navigation is particularly important here. It then rejoins a marked hiking trail and passes the Cabane CAS du Mont d’Or. The return route descends towards the valley, alternating between open terrain and woodland. Towards the end, the terrain becomes gentler and Vallorbe draws closer again. After just under five hours, the circular hike ends at the railway station, with public transport connections immediately at hand.
