01/ Overview
The route
Long-distance hike with views of the Bernina glaciers and the highest Graubünden peak, Piz Bernina (4049 m a.s.l.). Highlights: the Bernina pass with its lakes, the Diavolezza, the flowery Val Roseg, the culturally significant Engadine village of Sils together with views of the Bianco mountain ridge or the Upper Engadine lakes.
The approximately 68-kilometre multi-day tour begins at the Poschiavo stop. Initially, the route follows the Poschiavino, then climbs out of the valley through forest and across open slopes to Cavaglia. Passing the small Lagh da Palü reservoir, the mountain hiking trail leads to Alp Grüm and onwards to Lago Bianco.
Around the lakes on the Bernina Pass, the terrain becomes increasingly rocky. After roughly a third of the route, it reaches its highest point at around 3,000 m, not far from Sass Queder. A subsequent section runs outside the marked hiking trail network before reaching Diavolezza. The mountain trail then descends in a long sweep to Pontresina; the church of Sta. Maria stands directly on the route.
From Pontresina, the hike once again crosses open pastures and forest into the Upper Engadin. Towards the end, it reaches Sils Maria and the shore of Lake Sils. The route continues via Grevasalvas to the destination of Maloja, where the Maloja, Posta stop is around 150 metres away. Around 27 hours of walking time should be allowed for the entire route.
