01/ Overview

The route

A forest trail with views of the Italian Alps in the distance leads past the glacier mills of the Cavaglia gorge down to the Poschiavo Valley. The second part of the route is flat, accompanied by the Rhaetian Railway and the burbling of the Poschiavino river.

Cavaglia lies at around 1,700 metres, the highest point of the hike. The starting point is just under 400 metres from Cavaglia station. Initially, a white-red-white waymarked mountain path leads through open meadows and woodland. Before long, a clearing opens up views down into Val Poschiavo.

The long descent defines the first half of the route. After around six kilometres, the route reaches Poschiavo, where the mountain path and woodland give way to a broader hiking trail. From here, the route continues through the increasingly built-up valley floor. Small counter-ascents interrupt the descent only briefly.

Towards the end, the trail leads via Annunziata and Spinadascio to Le Prese. Shortly before the destination, Lago di Poschiavo comes into view, and the hike draws to a close on its shore. Le Prese station is right by the finishing point. Around three hours should be allowed for the twelve kilometres, with approximately 780 metres of descent.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
