Bernina-Tour, Stage 1/5

From Val Poschiavo, with its Italian flair, you climb up to the Bernina Pass, where the whitish Lago Bianco lies nestled in a stony grassland. The path is lined with stone walls, natural forests and the serpentines of the Rhaetian Railway. Time and again, fantastic views open up.

The ascent to the Bernina Pass, taking just over five hours, begins at Poschiavo station. Initially, the trail briefly follows the Poschiavino before leaving the valley floor. Soon the mountain hiking trail climbs steadily through the forest. A clearing provides a view back into Val Poschiavo before the route continues to gain elevation via Cavaglia.

At Lagh da Palü, the trail reaches the small reservoir at the foot of Piz Palü. It then climbs to Alp Grüm, an ideal spot for a scenic break. The forest now gradually recedes, with open meadows and rocky terrain characterising the final section. The route follows the shore of Lago Bianco to the top of the pass. Shortly before the finish, it reaches the hike’s highest point at around 2,270 m. After a total ascent of approximately 1,350 metres, the tour ends at Ospizio Bernina station.
