01/ Overview
The route
From the Bernina Pass up to Alp Grüm, with views into Val Poschiavo. Then descent from Alp Grüm along a historic pack-mule track to the urban charm of Poschiavo. Visit to the glacier mills at Cavaglia.
From the Ospizio Bernina stop, the mountain path crosses open terrain. Shortly after the start, the route reaches its highest point at around 2'270 m. It then skirts the shore of Lago Bianco before beginning the long descent towards Alp Grüm. The restaurant offers a first opportunity for a rest.
Below Alp Grüm, the white-red-white waymarked path leads to Lagh da Palü, a reservoir at the foot of Piz Palü. The route continues past the lake to Cavaglia. It then enters increasingly dense woodland; a viewpoint opens up vistas into Val Poschiavo.
Over the final few kilometres, the steep descent continues all the way to Poschiavo. In total, the 14-kilometre route involves just over 1'300 metres of descent and takes around four hours. The destination is near the Poschiavo, Curtinell stop.
