Bernina-Tour, Stage 3/5

From the glacier world of the Diavolezza, the route heads into the Val da Fain, known for its marmots and magnificent alpine flora. With a bit of luck, you may spot an ibex in the rocks of Piz Albris. You finally descend over the vast stone desert of Fuorcla Pischa to the Engadine mountaineering village of Pontresina.

The tour starts at the Diavolezza upper station, directly by Berghaus Diavolezza. After only a few steps, the route reaches its highest point at just under 3,000 m; Sass Queder rises nearby but is not reached by the trail. The first section leads through rocky high-Alpine terrain past Laj da Diavolezza. This initial stretch of almost three kilometres runs outside the marked hiking trail network before joining a mountain trail.

The route continues across open high ground and through barren, stony terrain. Despite Pontresina lying considerably lower, it gains a total of around 900 metres in elevation. Fuorcla Pischa is reached after a little over three and a half hours; slightly off the route lies Lej da Pischa at 2,770 m. The mountain trail then passes Lej Languard and begins the long descent. After 14 kilometres and just over five hours, the first houses of Pontresina come into view. The destination is near the Pontresina, Rondo stop.
