01/ Overview
The route
This trip offers exceptional views of the crevasseriven Morteratsch Glacier and of the ice-capped peaks of the Bernina massif. Along the way, 16 information panels illustrate the retreat of the glacier.
The six-kilometre circular hike begins at Morteratsch railway station, just a few steps from the Morteratsch stop. Right from the start, the white-red-white marked mountain trail climbs through rocky terrain. After just over one kilometre, the route’s highest point is already reached at around 2,050 m. In this area, the Chünetta viewpoint lies slightly off the trail. This initial ascent accounts for a substantial part of the approximately 240 metres of elevation gain.
The scenery then changes: stretches of woodland provide shade, interspersed with open meadows and pastures. The mountain trail remains the predominant type of path throughout the circuit, leading back towards Morteratsch over varied, undulating terrain. Over a short distance, rock, forest and open ground create striking contrasts. After just under two hours, the circuit ends back at the railway station. Restaurant Morteratsch is located close to the start and finish, and the railway station is likewise only a few steps away.
