Bernina-Tour, Stage 4/5

A gentle ascent leads along the river through the idyllic Val Roseg, where massive boulders lie among flowers and conifers. The trail then climbs steeply over pastures with views of the surrounding peaks and the glaciers of Sella and Roseg. At Fuorcla Surlej, you cross a gravel landscape.

The hike begins at the Pontresina, Rondo stop in the heart of the village. The route passes the Reformed Church of San Niculò and soon leaves the houses behind. It gains increasing elevation across open meadows and through a section of forest. After the gentle start, a mountain trail marked white-red-white defines the rest of the route. The 14-kilometre hike involves around 1,100 metres of ascent and takes just under five hours.

Higher up, the forest and pastures give way to increasingly rocky terrain. The long ascent leads up to Fuorcla Surlej, where the restaurant of the same name offers an opportunity for a break. Shortly afterwards, the route reaches its highest point near Corn d’Arlas at around 2,760 m. From here, the mountain trail descends to Murtèl, with only a few short uphill sections remaining. The hike ends at the restaurant by the mid-station; the Murtèl stop is around 150 m away.
