01/ Overview

The route

This walk offers exceptional views in an old Swiss stone pine forest, over Lake St. Moritz and towards S-chanf.

From the Pontresina stop, the route quickly leaves the village behind. After a short opening stretch, the white-red-white waymarked mountain trail climbs through the forest. The ascent remains steep for much of the way and gradually emerges into open, rocky terrain.

After just over three kilometres, the highest point is reached at around 2,300 m. Shortly afterwards, Muottas da Schlarigna provides the rewarding highlight of the hike. Here, the forest recedes and the high-altitude landscape of the Upper Engadin dominates the view. In total, around 560 metres of ascent have been completed.

The route then turns downhill. The long descent runs mainly along mountain trails, initially across open slopes and later once again among trees. Towards the end, the trail approaches the built-up area of St. Moritz Bad. After eight kilometres and just under three hours, the hike ends near the St. Moritz Bad, Post stop.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
