01/ Overview
The route
A steep mountain trail, open alpine pastures and sweeping views down to Lake Lucerne: this circular hike from Seebodenalp passes close to Rigi Rotstock and returns via Känzeli.
The cable car from Küssnacht provides easy access to the starting point on Seebodenalp. From the Seebodenalp station, the circular hike initially follows a broad hiking trail before the demanding ascent towards Rigi Staffel enters the forest. Higher up, the mountain trail becomes steeper as the trees give way to alpine pastures and open slopes. After around 600 metres of ascent, the highest point is reached near Rigi Rotstock at just under 1,600 m. From here, there are striking views down to Lake Lucerne.
The route then continues via Rigi Staffel and past Regina Montium. The trail descends to Rigi Känzeli, where the views once again extend far across the lake and the Pre-Alps. Alternating between forest and pastures, the route follows the Moränenweg down to Alp Ruodisegg. The alpine inn lies directly on the route and is ideal for a break. The final stretch is gentler, crossing Seebodenalp and passing St. Wendelinskapelle before returning to the Seebodenalp station.

How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
