01/ Overview

The route

A short circuit across Seebodenalp, where traces of the Ice Age, open pastures and stretches of woodland shape the route between the chapel and the mountain inn.

From the Seebodenalp bus stop, it is only a few steps to the start of the circuit. The Geology Trail begins at St. Wendelin’s Chapel, tracing evidence of the Ice Age across Seebodenalp. The glacial trail is also listed in the «Erlebnis Geologie» directory. The broad hiking trail initially runs through open meadows and pastures on Rigi. After around two kilometres, the Ruodisegg mountain inn lies directly on the route.

Open areas and woodland then alternate. A short section runs outside the marked hiking trail network before the circuit rejoins the trail. In its final third, the route climbs to its highest point at around 1,120 m, not far from Rigi Rotstock. From there, the trail descends gently across Seebodenalp. After just under five kilometres and around an hour and a half, the Seeboden car park comes into view, followed shortly afterwards by the Seebodenalp bus stop once again.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
