01/ Overview
The route
A gentle opening stretch across Seebodenalp is followed by a steep ascent to Rigi Känzeli. At the top, panoramic views open up over the Lake Lucerne basin and the Alps.
The hike begins almost level at Seebodenalp cable car station. The trail follows an avenue of trees across the outlying terrace, passing St. Wendelinskapelle and continuing to the Ruodisegg mountain inn. Meadows and pastures characterise this peaceful opening stretch.
At Alp Ruodisegg, the pace changes as the mountain trail begins to climb considerably more steeply. The route quickly gains elevation via Alp Räb and through wooded slopes. Shortly before Känzeli, it reaches its highest point at around 1,460 m. From the viewpoint, panoramic views extend across the Lake Lucerne basin to the Alps.
The trail then becomes gentler again and heads towards Rigi Kaltbad. Shortly before the destination stands the rock chapel of St. Michael, which became a place of pilgrimage due to a legend and is considered worthy of protection. A little later, the two-hour hike ends at Rigi Kaltbad; the cable car station is around 130 m away, and both the cogwheel railway and cable car descend into the valley.

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
