Chaltenbrunnen-Hochmoorweg

An attractive circular hike to the most elevated high moor in Europe with countless small ponds and little lakes. The hike is distinguished by a magnificent view of the Hasliberg and the final crescendo at the Reichenbach waterfall.

The approximately 14-kilometre hike begins at the Kaltenbrunnen bei Meiringen bus stop. From Chaltenbrunnen, the white-red-white waymarked mountain trail climbs through open meadows and pastures. The ascent defines the first section: a total of around 880 metres of elevation is gained before the highest point, at approximately 1,870 m, is reached after just over five kilometres.

The elevation profile then changes markedly. Over the long descent, the trail loses around 1,100 metres in elevation and increasingly enters the forest. Rather than numerous intermediate destinations, the rhythm is now shaped by the slopes and the alternation between open terrain and woodland. Several fountains are located directly along the route. After just under four and a half hours, the mountain trail reaches Falcheren; from here, a yellow-waymarked hiking trail continues onward.

Towards the end, the route passes close to the Reichenbach Falls. Its seven cascades descend a total of 300 metres; it became famous through Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Final Problem”. After around five hours, the hike ends at Restaurant Zwirgi, directly beside the bus stop of the same name.
