Via Alpina, Stage 10/20

After the rock barrier with the Reichenbach Falls, the trail follows the valley floor. We hike past the nostalgic Rosenlaui Hotel and glacier gorge, enchanted by the Wetterhorn. The route then crosses beautiful moorlands over the Grosse Scheidegg to Grindelwald in the heart of the Jungfrau region.

From the Meiringen, Casinoplatz bus stop, this long day hike leads out of the Haslital, climbing to the Grosse Scheidegg and continuing to Grindelwald. At first, the route briefly follows the Lugibach. Above Schattenhalb, the Reichenbach Falls lie close to the route; their seven cascades drop a total of 300 metres. Woodland and open meadows then alternate as the broad hiking trail steadily gains altitude.

After Alpiglen, the mountain trail crosses increasingly open terrain towards the Grosse Scheidegg. At around 1'960 m, the route reaches its highest point, directly below the Wetterhorn. Here, the pass links the Haslital with the valley of the Schwarze Lütschine. The descent to Grindelwald begins on a mountain trail before later joining a yellow-waymarked hiking trail. Open pastures characterise the long descent, interspersed with darker stretches of woodland. After around 23 kilometres and just over eight hours, the hike ends near Grindelwald railway station. With around 1'600 metres of ascent, it requires a good level of fitness.
