01/ Overview
The route
The around 500-year-old suone (irrigation channel) «Bisse des Sarrasin» and its 17 information panels are of great historical and technical interest. The route then leads via the «Grand Bisse de St-Jean» suone to the typical Valais village of Grimentz.
From the Vercorin, poste bus stop, the approximately 17-kilometre route initially leads through the village and then descends into the valley. It follows yellow-waymarked hiking trails almost throughout. Shady woodland sections alternate with open meadows and pastures; after the lowest point, the long ascent begins, climbing around 900 metres in total.
About halfway along, the trail reaches Pinsec. It then continues with steady ups and downs to Mayoux before climbing via St-Jean VS. There, the route passes the Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire. Towards the end, the trail once again gains significant elevation, reaching its highest point at just under 1,600 metres shortly before Grimentz.
After just over five and a half hours, the hike ends in the village of Grimentz. The Grimentz, Carovilla bus stop is located right by the finish.
