Chemin du Jura bernois, Stage 4/4

There is a gentle descent from Mont-Soleil, with its impressive power plants, to La Chaux-de-Fonds, a city laid out like a chessboard. Moving across wide high Jura pastures with ancient trees and past moss-covered drystone walls, the view opens up across the Vallon de Saint-Imier and the Chasseral.

The hike begins at the Mont-Soleil (funiculaire) stop in St-Imier. From Mont-Soleil, the yellow-waymarked hiking trail leads through alternating woodland and open Jura meadows. The Belvédère lies almost directly on the route near the start. Later, the trail passes the Auberge L'Assesseur before reaching its highest point at around 1,200 metres after roughly four kilometres.

The character of the route is then defined by gentle ups and downs across open pastures and through sections of woodland. Passing Droit de Renan, the route continues towards La Cibourg. The generally moderate descent continues via Les Reprises, with easy walking throughout on the waymarked hiking trail.

Towards the end, the surroundings become more built-up and the trail enters La Chaux-de-Fonds. After 18 kilometres and just over four hours, the hike ends at the La Chaux-de-Fonds, gare stop.
