01/ Overview
The route
The “Emmenuferweg” trail passes through one of the most charming river landscapes in the Canton Lucerne. From the source in the heart of the UNESCO Biosphere Entlebuch, it is an exciting multi-day tour ending in the vibrant outskirts of Greater Lucerne.
This exceptionally long hike begins at the Brienzer Rothorn, at just over 2,300 m. The highest point of the route comes right at the start. A mountain trail leads over the Eiseesattel and then down to Sörenberg. Open meadows and pastures characterise the first section; woodland and the first settlements then become more prominent.
The route continues through the Entlebuch via Flühli. The predominantly yellow-waymarked hiking trail links hamlets, open slopes and longer stretches of woodland. After Schüpfheim come Entlebuch and Wolhusen, while the terrain gradually becomes lower and more densely populated. In Werthenstein, the trail passes close to the pilgrimage church of Our Lady.
Towards the end, the Schwellisee lies directly beside the route. The landscape then changes definitively from rural countryside to continuous settlement. The trail leads via Littauerboden to Emmenbrücke railway station. With around 65 kilometres to cover and a walking time of just over 16 hours, the route is best divided into several stages.
