01/ Overview
The route
The high-level hike on the narrow ridge between the Brienzer Rothorn and the Wilerhorn offers sensational views of the high-mountain panorama and turquoise-coloured Lake Brienz. The trail then descends steeply along grassy or rocky slopes. With a bit of luck, you might spot a family of ibex.
The approximately twelve-kilometre hike begins near Brienzer Rothorn station. After the first ascent, the route reaches its highest point at Brienzer Rothorn, at around 2,330 m. The summit is also the highest point in the canton of Lucerne. The mountain trail then continues to Eiseesattel, with views down to Eisee, which lies off the route.
The white-red-white-marked route continues over open slopes and through rocky terrain, with constant ups and downs. Teiffengrad forms a striking feature along this long high-level section. The extended descent to Brünigpass then begins, dropping around 1,600 metres in elevation overall. Only shortly before the destination does the mountain trail give way to an easier hiking path. After a little over four hours, the hike ends at Brünig-Hasliberg station. Here, Brünigpass connects the Haslital in the Bernese Oberland with the Sarneraatal in the canton of Obwalden.
