01/ Overview
The route
The Hüttchopf, located on the west edge of the zoological and botanical nature preserve, offers the best view of the headwaters of the Töss and the hilly world of the Zurich Oberland.
The approximately 14-kilometre hike begins at Steg railway station in the Tösstal. It initially leads out of the village and through the sparsely settled slopes of the Zürcher Oberland. Open meadows and stretches of woodland soon begin to alternate. Buri waterfall lies directly on the route and provides a first highlight before the steeper ascent.
The trail then climbs higher. For a short stretch, it becomes a white-red-white marked mountain trail before easier hiking trails resume. Roughly halfway along the route, Hüttchopf marks the highest point at around 1,230 metres. Open pastures characterise the high ground; shortly afterwards, the route passes directly by Alp Scheidegg.
The long descent to Wald once again leads through woodland and across open slopes. Near the end, Schmittenbach waterfall lies directly beside the trail, after which the first houses signal the approach to the destination. After a good four and a half hours, the hike ends at Wald ZH railway station.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
