Jura Crest Trail, Stage 5/16

The reward for the steep climb to Höllchöpfli is the views along the high-level hike through forests and meadows. Passing unusual geological features and many mountain restaurants to the Weissenstein – «Solothurn’s balcony».

From the Balsthal bus stop, the yellow-waymarked hiking trail leads out of the village and soon climbs into the wooded Jura hills. Along the long first section, shady stretches of forest alternate with open meadows and pastures. After the strenuous ascent, Hällchöpfli marks the first major highlight; the viewpoint lies directly on the route.

The trail then continues through forest and across open heights to Höch-Chrütz and later to Balmberg. These two passes divide the long middle section. Between them, the alternation of forest, meadows and pastures continues to define the landscape, and the route follows the waymarked hiking trail throughout.

Towards the end comes the final sustained ascent towards Weissenstein. Shortly before the destination, the route reaches its highest point at around 1,260 m. After 21 kilometres and just over six hours, the hike ends at Weissenstein. The stop of the same name is only a few minutes’ walk from the endpoint.
