01/ Overview

The route

The crest trails near Wasserfallen boast views in every direction: to the north-west, you are greeted by the Black Forest and the Vosges. The Alps impress to the south – on a clear day, you can see all the way from the Allgäu to Mont Blanc. An additional highlight is the highest point in Basel-Country – «Hinteri Egg».

The ten-kilometre circular hike begins at Wasserfallen mountain station, a few steps from the stop of the same name. The trail climbs across open Jura meadows and through sections of forest to Hinteri Egg. Shortly afterwards, it crosses rocky terrain past the Chellenchoepfli viewpoint. The Rochuskapelle then stands directly beside the trail.

Pastures and forest alternate on the continuing ascent. At Vogelberg, the route reaches its highest point at just over 1,200 m. The highest mountain in the Passwang massif is renowned as a viewpoint; it is well worth pausing here before the trail continues across the Passwang. A little further on, Berghaus Vogelberg offers an opportunity to stop for refreshments.

The return route descends on well-marked hiking trails through longer stretches of forest and across open pastures to Wasserfalle. Towards the end, the mountain station comes back into view. After a little over three hours and around 600 metres of ascent, the varied circular hike ends where it began.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
