01/ Overview
The route
A varied hike between the upper St.Imier Valley and the Val de Ruz Valley with the winter-sports resort, Le Pâquier (hometown of ski-ace Didier Cuche). The top of the Vue des Alpes pass is not far from watch metropolis La Chaux-de-Fonds.
The hike begins on Chasseral, which, at just over 1,600 m, is both the highest point on the route and the highest peak in the Bernese Jura. However, the starting point is not served directly by public transport; the nearest stop, Chasseral, Hôtel, is just over a kilometre away. From the summit, the yellow-waymarked hiking trail leads across open Jura meadows and through stretches of forest.
The long descent ends at Le Pâquier. The elevation profile then reverses: the trail climbs again, alternating between pastures and forest. Towards the end, the route crosses the 1,417 m Mont d’Amin before descending to the Vue des Alpes pass.
After around 20 kilometres and almost six hours, the destination is reached. The pass, at 1,283 m, lies between Neuchâtel and La Chaux-de-Fonds and owes its name to the panoramic view of the Alps. The Vue-des-Alpes bus stop is located directly at the finishing point.
