01/ Overview
The route
Cross-country ski enthusiasts enjoy the trail through the sunny high valley of Gonten with views of the scattered "Toobeschopfe" (old peat huts) and the gently rolling hills of the Appenzellerland. The varied circular tour at the foot of the Alpstein is mostly flat and ideal for beginners.
From the Gonten stop, it is only a few steps to the start of the six-kilometre trail. It quickly leaves the houses behind and heads out across open meadows. Gentle ascents and descents add up to around 110 metres of elevation gain; near Hundshenki, the route reaches its highest point at 915 m.
The trail then descends across wide-open terrain, skirting wetlands in places. Views remain uninterrupted as the track sweeps in a broad arc towards Gontenbad. The lowest point of the route lies shortly before the village.
From Gontenbad, the trail climbs gently again through the open countryside. Towards the end, the houses of Gonten draw closer. After a little over one and a half hours, the circuit ends at the starting point; the Gonten stop is around 150 m away.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
Cross-country skiing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
