01/ Overview
The route
The high valley of the «Biber» is the plain between Rothenthurm and Biberbrugg in Central Switzerland. It is a highmoor area of national significance and of outstanding beauty. The Moortrail leads through this remarkable landscape.
The almost three-hour hike to Rothenthurm begins directly at Biberbrugg railway station. The built-up area is soon left behind. The yellow-marked hiking trail climbs moderately through a landscape of open meadows, wetlands and small patches of woodland. In total, around 260 metres of ascent must be tackled.
After just over four kilometres, the route reaches its highest point near Ratengütsch at around 930 m. The climb is complete, and the terrain becomes gentler again. Broad pastures alternate with woodland, while wetlands in between shape the tranquil character of this pre-Alpine landscape. The trail remains pleasant and requires no special technical skills.
Towards the end, the route descends gradually to Rothenthurm. After a total of around ten kilometres, the hike ends in the village. The Rothenthurm, Dorf bus stop is only a few steps from the finish and provides a convenient connection for the return journey.
