01/ Overview
The route
The mountain stage of the Lake Zurich circuit takes you steadily upwards from Richterswil to the viewing point at Etzel, where you can take in a panoramic vista of the whole lake and more than 250 majestic peaks. The route then passes through forests and fields back to sea level in Pfäffikon SZ.
The hike begins at the Richterswil (See) stop, directly beside Lake Zurich. Before long, the trail leaves the shore behind and climbs out of the built-up area. Open meadows, stretches of woodland and quiet paths characterise the long ascent via Studenbühl to Schindellegi. The elevation gain mounts steadily, though the yellow-marked hiking trail never becomes technically difficult.
Beyond Schindellegi, the route continues uphill. Woodland becomes the dominant feature until the highest point, at around 1,100 m, is reached shortly before Etzel. Near the wooded summit, the Etzel Kulm mountain restaurant offers an opportunity for a break. The trail then descends to the Etzelpass at 950 m.
The long descent towards Lake Zurich now follows. Woodland and open meadows alternate once more before the houses of Pfäffikon draw nearer. The route finally passes through the built-up area to Pfäffikon SZ railway station. A good five hours should be allowed for the 17 kilometres and around 760 metres of ascent.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
