01/ Overview
The route
From alpine pastures into a rocky summit world: the natural history high trail climbs from Biwaldalp via Rotstocksattel to Uri Rotstock. In its upper section, it follows a challenging alpine path marked white-blue-white.
The route begins at Biwaldalp, away from public transport; the nearest stop, by the St. Jakob cable car, is over two kilometres away. Designed as a natural history high trail, it passes through the wildlife reserve, focusing on the area’s rich diversity of species along the way. Via Hoch Egg and Breit-Planggen, the mountain trail climbs through open alpine pastures with virtually no intervening descent.
At Im Lauberz, the waymarking changes to white-blue-white. The terrain now becomes more barren and rocky. At Gitschenhörelihütte, a privately owned hut, the alpine path to Rotstocksattel begins. At this altitude, rock and the Blüemlisalpfirn dominate the scenery, while the alpine pastures already crossed recede far below. From the saddle, the final steep ascent leads to Uri Rotstock. After just under nine kilometres, around 1,250 metres of ascent and a little over four hours, the route ends at the summit at around 2,900 metres, the highest point of the high trail.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
