01/ Overview

The route

From the high valley of Gitschenen, the route crosses the Hinterjochli to Klewenalp before a long descent to Beckenried on Lake Lucerne.

From Gitschenen, reached by cable car from Isenthal, the mountain path climbs steeply across open Alpine pastures. The route follows an old Alpine pass between Uri and Nidwalden. At the Hinterjochli, it reaches its highest point at just over 2,000 metres and crosses into the neighbouring canton, with the Schwalmis and Risetenstock flanking the pass.

The long descent begins on the northern side. Old farm and forestry tracks lead through Alpine pastures and woodland to Klewenalp. Before then, the Klewenkapelle stands directly beside the route. The cable car to Beckenried offers a shortcut here; on foot, the route continues markedly downhill on broader hiking trails and steeper mountain paths.

Below the alp, the forest becomes denser, interspersed with meadows overlooking the lake. The descent continues along old paths to the first houses of Beckenried. After a little over five hours, the stage ends near Lake Lucerne; the Beckenried PostBus stop is only a few steps from the finish.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
