01/ Overview
The route
From the Storegg pass, the hiking trail leads along the Obwalden mountain flank of Widderfeldstock, Nünalphorn and Huetstock past alpine huts, over pastures and through small forests to the holiday village of Melchsee-Frutt. The trail offers beautiful views of the wild landscape of the Melchtal valley.
Storeggpass is not served by public transport; the nearest stop, Melchtal, gedeckte Brücke, is around two and a half kilometres away. From the pass, the white-red-white waymarked mountain trail leads through open alpine pastures. Constantly rising and falling, it traverses the slopes, skirts woodland in places and descends to the lowest section of the route. Over 13 kilometres, this adds up to around 900 metres of elevation; a good four and a half hours should be allowed for the entire hike.
After around nine kilometres, the trail briefly follows the Bettenalpbach. Soon afterwards, the route passes the Bettenalp alpine hut before the final extended ascent begins. Near Vogelbiel, the trail reaches its highest point at just over 1,900 metres. The view then opens up over Melchsee, a mountain lake impounded by an artificial dam. The final stretch follows an easy hiking trail into the Dörfli of Melchsee-Frutt. The destination is close to the Melchsee-Frutt, Dörfli stop.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
