01/ Overview
The route
A magnificent high-altitude hike linking the Brunni and Bannalp regions. Your backdrop: the mountain world of the Walenstöcke massif, with sweeping vistas of the Mittelland. The path begins in meadowland and then gradually becomes more Alpine as you pass idyllic Lake Bannalp.
Near Engelberg, the hike begins not far from the Ristis stop. The mountain trail climbs across open slopes to the Brunnihütte SAC, situated at 1'860 m beside the Härzlisee. The route then crosses extensive pastureland to Walenalp. The valley floor gradually recedes as rocky flanks draw closer.
From Walenalp, the ascent continues. Shortly before Walegg, the highest point is reached at just under 1'950 m. The mountain trail then descends steadily on the Nidwalden side. Along the way, views open up over Bannalpsee, a reservoir lying slightly off the route. Towards the end, the trail becomes gentler and reaches Bannalp at the Chrüzhütte stop. Around four hours should be allowed for the eleven kilometres, with approximately 780 metres of ascent.
