ViaSbrinz, Stage 2/5

A challenging mountain stage over the 2207-metre-high Jochpass, the boundary between Inner Switzerland and the Bernese Oberland. The hike is enhanced by magnificent landscapes with mountain meadows, lakes and impressive peaks, above all the snow-capped Titlis.

From Engelberg railway station, the route initially crosses the valley floor and briefly follows the Engelberger Aa. Then the long ascent begins: the broad hiking trail gives way to a mountain path that climbs through increasingly open meadows and alpine pastures. A good five hours should be allowed for the 13 kilometres and around 1,300 metres of ascent.

After the first major climb, Trüebsee lies directly on the route. At 1,763 m, this mountain lake provides a tranquil counterpoint to the ascent that follows. Beyond the lake, the mountain path steepens again and reaches Jochpass. Shortly afterwards, near Rot Nollen, the route reaches its highest point at around 2,210 m.

The trail now descends over open, at times rocky terrain to Engstlenalp. Engstlensee lies directly on the route; it is a natural mountain lake that is also used as a reservoir. Beyond Hotel Engstlenalp, it is only a few more steps to the finish and the nearby Engstlenalp bus stop.
