Benediktusweg

The Benedictine way leads from the cloister in Engelberg to the one at Maria-Rickenbach. The route is quite varied and offers beautiful panoramic views of the valley and mountains.

The long mountain hike starts at the Engelberg stop and initially leads through the village. Passing the monastery church, the trail soon leaves the houses behind and climbs steeply. A mountain path ascends across open meadows and through stretches of woodland. After just under six kilometres, the highest point is reached near Rigidalstock at around 1,880 m. By this point, a large part of the approximately 1,600 metres of ascent has been completed.

This is followed by a long descent across alpine pastures to Walenalp, where the barbecue site is an inviting place to take a break. The mountain path continues down towards the valley, repeatedly entering the forest, and passes through Fell before reaching the houses of Oberrickenbach. At just over 860 m, this is the lowest section of the route.

From Oberrickenbach, the trail climbs for a second time and leads via Brändlen through alternating pastures and woodland. Towards the end, the trail becomes gentler again. After 22 kilometres and a little over eight hours, the hike ends at the Hl. Maria im Ahorn Chapel and the Niederrickenbach Dorf stop.
