Via Alpina, Stage 8/20

The trail leads over two rises to the scenic Trübsee lake at the foot of the Titlis and on over the Jochpass into the Bernese Oberland. The goal is Engstlenalp, an idyllic hotspot with lake, nostalgic hotel and thousands of Alpine roses.

The roughly twelve-kilometre hike begins at Engelberg railway station. A broad hiking trail leaves the village and soon climbs through forest. As it gains altitude, the mountain trail becomes steeper before the terrain opens out on Alp Ober Trüebsee. Trüebsee lies directly beside the trail at 1,763 m, surrounded by pastures and higher mountain slopes.

From the lake, the route continues across open terrain to the Jochpass. The ascent remains demanding and runs mainly along trails marked white-red-white. Shortly after the pass, the hike reaches its highest point at around 2,200 m near Rot Nollen. The long descent towards Engstlenalp then begins, with Engstlensee drawing closer between pastures and rocky sections.

The final section follows the shore of the natural mountain lake and eventually passes Hotel Engstlenalp. After a good five hours, the hike ends at Engstlenalp. The bus stop of the same name is just a few steps from the finishing point.
