01/ Overview
The route
The circular trail at Braunwald in Glarus offers uninterrupted views of the high-Alpine mountain chain and an exciting nature experience. Deep green forests, austere rock formations and a captivating panorama invite you to linger.
The eight-kilometre circular hike starts at the Braunwald stop in the heart of the village. The yellow-marked hiking trail soon leads out onto meadows and pastures. With steady ups and downs, the route sweeps in a wide arc around Braunwald, entering longer stretches of forest before repeatedly returning to open terrain. The circuit involves around 220 metres of ascent and takes approximately two hours.
In the final quarter, the houses draw closer again. The trail passes Restaurant Cristal and shortly afterwards climbs to its highest point at just over 1,300 metres, near Tüfels-Chilchli. The Bruder Klaus Chapel, which stands directly beside the route, follows soon after. The trail then leads back through the residential area to Braunwald and the stop of the same name, where the circular hike ends.

Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
