01/ Overview

The route

This scenic walk through Freiberg Kärpf, Europe's oldest wildlife reserve, leads across the 50 meter wide Kärpf bridge and along the Garichti lake back to Mettmen.

From the Mettmen stop, the seven-kilometre circuit initially leads through the small settlement to the Garichti reservoir, also known as Mettmensee. The trail touches the lakeshore before climbing through open meadows and pastures. After the wildlife observation station, it reaches Alp Ober Stafel.

The hiking trail now becomes a mountain trail. Climbing steadily above the alp, the route gains height and reaches its highest point near Matzlenstock at just under 2,000 m. The summit itself lies off the circuit. The trail continues across open terrain to Matzlenfurggelen before beginning its descent.

Towards the end, the route alternates between pastures and woodland. A barbecue site near the southern lakeshore makes an ideal spot for a final break before the trail returns to Mettmen. After just under two and a half hours and around 400 metres of ascent, the stop is reached once again.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
