01/ Overview
The route
The hiking trail along the Obwalden mountain flank of Huetstock, Nünalphorn and Widderfeldstock leads past alpine huts, over pastures and through small forests towards the Storegg pass. It offers beautiful views of the wild landscape of the Melchtal valley. After crossing the pass, you can take the Eggen cable car back down.
The hike begins near Melchsee at the Melchsee-Frutt, Dörfli bus stop. Shortly after the start, the mountain trail reaches its highest point at Vogelbiel, at just over 1,900 m. It then descends across open alpine pastures to the Bettenalp hut. The route follows the Bettenalpbach for a short while, although the nearby waterfall lies off the trail.
Pastures and forest alternate during the continuing descent. The lowest point is reached roughly halfway through the hike. The elevation profile now changes: the white-red-white waymarked mountain trail regains height in a steady succession of ascents and descents.
Towards the end, the rocky terrain around Storegghorn draws closer. After around 13 km and just under four and a half hours, the final ascent leads to Storeggpass. The route ends here, away from public transport; the nearest stop, Melchtal, gedeckte Brücke, is around two and a half kilometres away.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
