01/ Overview
The route
The Wald panoramic cross-country ski trail fully justifies its name: The classic trail on the Bachtel, Zurich Oberland’s local mountain, offers a spectacular panoramic view. In good weather you can spot the Churfirsten peaks, the Rigi and enjoy the view over the Lake Zurich.
From the Wald ZH, Riet bus stop, it is only a few steps to the start near Gibswil. The 18-kilometre trail soon leaves the houses behind and leads via Ried and Büel into the open hills of the Zürcher Oberland. With around 400 metres of ascent in total, the circuit requires not only stamina but also strength for several climbs.
The route continues via Hintersennenberg to Bachtelweiher and then towards Bachtelhörnli. After around seven kilometres, the trail reaches its highest point at approximately 930 metres. Gentle descents and further climbs then alternate. The route passes directly by the soup wagon before reaching Schufelberg.
In its final third, the trail heads back north across broad meadows. Oberbüel marks the last settlement before Gibswil. After just over five hours, the circuit closes at the starting point near the Wald ZH, Riet bus stop.
