01/ Overview
The route
Ten minutes of playful whoops, pure fun, snowy splendour and adrenaline rushes: The Gornergrat sledge run is one of the most beautiful in the Alps – and the hightest in Switzerland. The Alpine panorama of Zermatt with a view of the Matterhorn offers sledgers the best landscape you could dream of.
The short toboggan descent begins at Rotenboden station at around 2,800 m, the highest point on the route. Right at the start, there is a viewpoint amid rocky surroundings. From there, the route descends across open slopes. The Riffelhorn, a peak in the Valais Alps south of Zermatt, forms part of the nearby mountain scenery, although it lies a good half-kilometre off the route.
Over a distance of only around one kilometre, the toboggan run descends some 240 metres. After the rocky opening section, the descent continues across open terrain. With no named intermediate stops, the route carries on downhill towards Riffelberg. After approximately a quarter of an hour, it reaches the first buildings at around 2,600 m. The lowest point of the route lies immediately before the finish at Riffelberg station.
