01/ Overview
The route
An idyllic hike through a beautiful forest of arolla pines and larches. The walk takes you to Findeln, where there are breathtaking views of the Matterhorn.
The snowshoe tour starts on Riffelalp at the Riffelalp, Hotel stop. Initially, the route climbs through the forest. After just over a kilometre, it reaches its highest point near Gugle at around 2,280 m. This marks the end of the short counter-ascent; the total ascent is only around 120 metres.
The route then turns downhill. Beyond the highest point, it is almost entirely downhill. The forest gradually thins out, and open terrain characterises the longer descent towards Findeln. The first views across the slopes open up between the trees. Over four kilometres, the route descends around 300 metres and reaches the houses of Bord after just under two hours. From Bord, the final short section crosses open terrain to the destination at Zermatt, Findeln, around 400 m from the stop of the same name.
