01/ Overview
The route
On the Heimischgarte Trail the Saas Valley shows its quiet side. The delightful snowshoe hike above Saas-Balen leads through the snow-covered “Löübinobodme” natural forest reserve with views of the breathtaking mountains and the glacier landscape.
The roughly 9 km snowshoe tour begins in Saas-Balen, Dorf; the bus stop is practically at the start. The route takes just under five hours and involves about 620 m of ascent, running first deep in the forest and later opening out into exposed terrain.
At first the track passes the village inn Der Schwiizer and soon climbs into dense spruce forest. Past scattered homesteads such as Matt, the path reaches its highest ground at about 2,090 m; here wide, snow-covered flanks open up. In clear conditions the view stretches down the Saas Valley and to the opposite slopes.
The descent runs over alpine pastures and small settlements like Oberi Brend and Unneri Brend; past Witi Brunne and Lengi Flüe the route skirts individual farms before dropping down to Saas-Grund. In Saas-Grund the Saaser Bäckerei lies slightly off the route; the Saas-Grund (Hohsaas Talst.) bus stop is close by, where the tour ends.
