01/ Overview
The route
Past the highest football pitch in Europe and then onto winding paths leading higher and higher – after hiking through the snow-covered larch forest, snowshoe hikers will reach the top of the route with wonderful views of the Bietschhorn, Aletschhorn and Finsteraarhorn.
The four-kilometre snowshoe loop begins right by the Gspon mountain station. The ascent starts between the houses of Gspon and Ze Hischinu. The Church of St Anna stands a little way from the starting point. The village is soon left behind as the route enters the forest. The 220 metres of ascent are spread over around two hours, making the climb manageable, though it continues steadily uphill.
Higher up, the forest gives way to open meadows and pastures. After just over two kilometres, the loop reaches its highest point at around 2,040 m. The trail then descends again towards Gspon, dips back among the trees and finally approaches the first houses. The loop closes near Restaurant Alpenblick; a few steps later, the Gspon mountain station is reached.
