01/ Overview
The route
A snowshoe trail that runs from Schwarzsee to below the steep northern face of the Matterhorn, passing through the splendid village of Stafelalp. A stunning sight!
The snowshoe tour begins at the Zermatt Schwarzsee stop at around 2,590 m, which is also its highest point. Nearby lies the small Schwarzsee, which gave the ridge its name. The panorama extends from the Matterhorn across the Monte Rosa massif and the Mischabel group to Dent Blanche and Weisshorn. The long descent then begins. The route leads downhill across broad, open terrain, reaching the houses of Biel just over halfway along the trail.
Further down, the Zmutt reservoir comes into view, and the route runs directly along its shore. Shortly afterwards comes Zmutt, before the landscape becomes increasingly wooded. Between trees and scattered houses, the snowshoe trail continues to lose elevation as it heads towards Furi. By the Restaurant Furi, almost all of the approximately 760 metres of descent have been completed. A little later, the eight-kilometre tour ends at the Furi stop.
