01/ Overview
The route
A typical winter panoramic view of the Zermatt region, guaranteed. This winter hiking trail starts in Rotenboden, runs along the Riffelhorn mountain and leads to a spectacular view of the sun-kissed Gornergrat mountain.
The winter hike begins at Rotenboden station, almost at its highest point, at around 2,800 m. The short trail initially crosses open high-alpine expanses before descending mostly towards Riffelberg. Rocky terrain soon dominates the scenery. To the side rises the Riffelhorn, a peak in the Valais Alps south of Zermatt.
Over two kilometres, the route descends around 260 metres. Only a few short uphill sections interrupt the steady descent. Around halfway, a viewpoint once again opens up views across the barren mountain landscape before the descent becomes gentler towards the end. Shortly before the destination, the winter hiking trail passes the Riffelberg Bruder Klaus chapel. A few steps later, Riffelberg is reached; the winter hike of just under an hour ends at the station of the same name.
